The humble barmbrack was always used as a divination tool on all Hallows Eve (Or Samhain). A few items were thrown into the dough and depending on what you got in your slice of the brack, determined the outcome of your following year.
These days, the items have been streamlined to include just the pea, a stick and a ring. Some barmbrack loaves contain the ring only – which usually causes a ferocious fight among the kids as to who will get to have it, but if you want to make your own and put all the original pieces in – there is a list of them and what they signified….
The Ring: You will get married within the next year.
The Pea: You will not get married within the next year.
The Thimble: You will have a life of domesticity.
The Button: Bachelorhood.
The Silver Coin: Wealth.
The Religious Medal: You will take your Holy Orders.
Chip of Wood: Domestic Abuse.
