Tonight as we tuck our kiddies into bed – (or not, given that its Friday) – the nearest miss since records began of an asteroid collision takes place. The asteroid, big enough to flatten New York or London, is zooming past us at a distance of only 17 thousand miles away. This may seem a significant distance by our standards, but by space standards – its pretty close! Scientists claim that it is close enough to knock out a manmade satelite.
The Asteroid called 2012 DA14 has an estimated diameter of 50 meters and and estimated mass of 190,000 metric tons.
The asteroid will be visible over Irish skies at 9pm (if the clouds clear away) but you can track it on the NASA stream where they have live coverage here
