Ireland’s Bio Blitz 2012 (the National Biodiversity Data Centre) is hosting an event in the Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve this coming weekend. The events look so great that my kids and I would love to simply pitch a tent near Glengarriff for the entire weekend.

Friday May 18th
Creatures of the Night
See how scientists catch moths, beetles & small mammals. Followed by a Bat Walk
led by Conor Kelleher (Cork Bat Group).
Time/Venue: 9pm, Flahive’s Lodge (base camp)
S a t u r d a y M a y 1 9 t h
Identifying bird song during the dawn chorus. Led by Peter Wolstenholme (BirdWatch
West Cork) with Calvin Jones (Ireland’s Wildlife).
Time/Venue: 4:00am (for 4:30am) Main car park/picnic area
Opening the traps: moth, small mammals and beetles
See for yourself what was found in the night by the various invertebrate and mammal
experts, including Chris Barron (KNP Education Centre) and mystery guests.

Guided Nature Walk: Mammals & woodlands
A look for signs of woodland animals e.g. otter, red squirrel and badger, with Declan
O’Donnell (NPWS) and friends.
Time/Venue: 11:00am Main car park/picnic area
Tracks, Bugs and Fish
Stephanie O’Toole & Mark Boyden (Streamscapes) will take children on a journey of discovery featuring land and water.
