Autumn feels so cold this year! The little birds are busy making the most of the evenings before they get too short. We got a lovely poster from Birdwatch Ireland which we have pinned up at the kitchen door.
Little enthusiasts are already wanting to feed the birds although I do think its a bit too early yet. Our birdfeeder has been neglected and swinging freely all summer long and will now need filling with peanuts.
A great thing to make with kids are fat balls for the Robins. Here is a simple recipe for a rainy afternoon.
Melt a block of lard or beef dripping in a pan. When it has melted add a a few handfuls of mixed birdseed and some chopped peanuts. If the mixture looks too runny, simply add in some raw oats to firm it up a bit. When the mix has cooled and started to set – give each child two tablespoons and have them ‘mould’ the mix into ball shapes. Put them on a baking sheet in the fridge overnight to set and then put them into a fat ball holder and hang it in the garden and wait patiently to see who your first consumer is!
