For two years I have said “no, maybe when you are older….” And for two years, I have heard nothing but repetitive begging “please can I get my ears pierced – please can I get my ears pierced”
So, today, while on a different errand in the city – a knee jerk reaction when asked “please can I get my ears pierced” for the thousandth time, I crumbled and said “Oh, alright then!”
I still don’t know who was more surprised – her, or me.
I have not been against piercing because of this….

But rather because I feel that at 8 years of age, she may regret it down the line – take them out and the holes will close. I have heard from people who have had their ears re-pierced (at a later stage) that they have had all sorts of trouble where the piercing simply won’t heal on old scar tissue etc. So that – along with the possibility of an infection – have been my biggest reservations.
We went in to Claire’s Accesories as they have a very reputable status in the world of piercing (and certainly get a LOT of practise). I was impressed with the level of efficiency from the moment we entered the shop.
First, we were shown the choices of starter earrings for the actual piercing (all 9ct gold) and different designs. The prices start at 31.95 and work up from there and the price includes a care kit of instructions, cleaning lotion and a spare set of backing clips.
We went for the small gold stud which matches her hair and colouring beautifully! Then there was a consent form which asked very pertinent questions (nice to know adventurous tweens and teens and tots can’t just waltz in and come out with all sorts of piercings).
For the process itself, the child is given the Claire’s Bear to hug and to hold. I find it endearing to imagine how many nervous girls have clung onto him for courage during a piercing!
The ladies performing the deed were wonderful – when little nerves faltered at the last minute, they were kind, encouraging and VERY patient. The experience was finished off with great fuss and camaraderie and a sticker saying ” I had my ears pierced today” and strawberry lollipop!
