I cant seem to find any information on it in the local papers but the children saw a poster up in town advertising the Whiddy Island Family Festival both today, Saturday (16th April) and tomorrow. Today we were all so caught up in other things that they didnt remember it.
But, at bedtime tonight, they were begging me to make up some sandwhiches so we can go to the Whiddy Festival. They recall the poster saying greyhound racing, bouncy castles, face-painting and FREE mussels!
Hmm, sounds great fun and if the weather looks good tomorrow, I think we might just pack the picnic lunch and head over. I am not sure of the times but if you look at the Whiddy Ferry website, there is a time-table of sailings and a lot of history about the island.
Whiddy Island has long been a source of fascination for me – it is a small island, about 3 miles long by 1.5 miles wide but has a long and interesting history . There is also a particular house on Whiddy that I have had my eye on for years!
A bit of a folly really, as it is completely landlocked (no land access) and cannot be reached by the main island ferry. It has its own jetty which would mean firing up your own diesel ferry to bring you to your diesel people carrier to do your grocery shopping! Still, it comes with a delightful 44 acres of shorefront property and at the height of the property boom it was selling for a cool 1.5 million Euros. Things are quieter now and the house is on the market for about 450k – still unaffordable but worth playing the lotto for – and definately worth a visit!
I think if the kids have got it wrong about the events tomorrow, we might just pick our way along the shore and go and daydream at this door! x
